 Set up dynamic DNS

Information
How do I set up dynamic DNS?

A dynamic DNS service makes sure that the IP address attached to your domain name changes when your ISP gives your Firebox a new IP address.

You can register the external IP address of the Firebox with one of these dynamic Domain Name Server (DNS) service providers:

  • Dyn.com — tiered pricing
  • No-ip.com — free
  • Dynu.com — free
  • Dnsdynamic.org — free
  • Afraid.org — free
  • Duckdns.org — free

Dyn.com offers tiered pricing. The other providers are free. WatchGuard is not affiliated with these providers. No other dynamic DNS providers are supported.

NOTE: Dyn.com is the only supported dynamic DNS provider in Fireware v12.1 and lower.

Configure the Firebox to use Dynamic DNS

Before you configure the Firebox for dynamic DNS, you must create an account on your service provider's website and set up at least one DNS server. For instructions, see the documentation from your provider.

In Fireware v11.12.2 and higher, you can select to have the service provider use the IP address from your router or NAT device instead of the IP address of the external interface on your Firebox. For example, you might want to select this option if the external interface of your Firebox has an IP address in a private range.

To set up dynamic DNS with Policy Manager:

  1. Select Network > Configuration. Click the WINS/DNS tab, then click the Dynamic DNS tab.
  2. Select the external interface you want to configure dynamic DNS for and click Configure. Select the Enable Dynamic DNS check box.
  3. Type the user name, password, and domain name you used to set up your dynamic DNS account. Specify any Options that you have configured.
  4. For the service provider to use the IP address from your router or NAT device, select the Allow the dynamic DNS provider to determine the IP address check box.

To set up dynamic DNS with Fireware Web UI:

  1. Select Network > Dynamic DNS.
  2. Select the external interface you want to configure dynamic DNS for and click Configure. Select the Enable Dynamic DNS check box.
  3. Type the user name, password, and domain name you used to set up your dynamic DNS account. Specify any Options that you have configured.
  4. For service provider to use the IP address from your router or NAT device, select the Allow the dynamic DNS provider to determine the IP address check box.
