About WatchGuard AP license enforcement for Basic Wi-Fi subscriptions
WatchGuard Access Point (AP) License Enforcement for Basic Wi-Fi Subscriptions
WatchGuard is introducing changes that affect how your APs are managed and supported after their Basic Wi-Fi subscriptions expire.
What is included with a Basic Wi-Fi AP subscription?
With a Basic Wi-Fi AP subscription, you can manage an AP with a Gateway Wireless Controller on a Firebox and have access to WatchGuard’s Standard Support package for your AP. This includes 24x7 technical support with unlimited support cases, advanced hardware replacement service, and access to software updates. For more information on available Wi-Fi subscriptions from WatchGuard, see Wi-Fi Packages.
When does Basic Wi-Fi licensing enforcement begin?
Beginning with the Fireware v12.5.1 release, WatchGuard will enforce licensing requirements for Basic Wi-Fi APs. Each WatchGuard AP managed by a Gateway Wireless Controller on a Firebox must be activated with a Basic Wi-Fi license subscription.
What happens when a Basic Wi-Fi AP subscription expires?
When a Basic Wi-Fi AP subscription expires:
Customers must have a current valid Basic Wi-Fi subscription to receive support for a WatchGuard AP managed by a Gateway Wireless Controller on a Firebox.
If the Firebox has an active support subscription, you can receive support for issues specific to the Gateway Wireless Controller. Support issues specific to APs managed by the Gateway Wireless Controller require a valid AP subscription.
If your AP was purchased and activated before September 1, 2018 with a Basic Wi-Fi subscription, your AP is exempt from license enforcement, however, you must have a current valid Basic Wi-Fi subscription if you require support for the AP.
How does the Gateway Wireless Controller manage AP licenses?
After an AP is successfully activated, the Gateway Wireless Controller continuously monitors the status of your AP’s Basic Wi-Fi subscription and expiry date. You can view the current license status of your APs in the Gateway Wireless Controller, and you will receive notifications in the user interface when an AP has less than 90 days remaining until expiry.
When a WatchGuard AP is activated or renewed with a Basic Wi-Fi subscription in your WatchGuard account, the AP license status is automatically updated by the Gateway Wireless Controller and an AP feature key downloaded to the Firebox. You can also manually download the AP feature key from your WatchGuard account and import it to the Gateway Wireless Controller.
What happens with my current activated APs with Basic Wi-Fi subscriptions when enforcement begins?
Any APs that are already activated with a valid Basic Wi-Fi subscription will continue to function as normal. You can view the license status and expiry date for your AP subscriptions from the Gateway Wireless Controller and in your WatchGuard Support Center account.
How do I activate new APs?
You can activate your new APs at www.watchguard.com/activate
Log in to your WatchGuard account, then add the serial number of your AP to your account. Make sure the AP you are activating has a Basic Wi-Fi subscription. (Total and Secure Wi-Fi subscriptions are for cloud-managed APs)
An AP feature key will be generated and downloaded to the Gateway Wireless Controller on the Firebox. You can also manually download the AP feature key from your WatchGuard account and import it to the Gateway Wireless Controller.
How do I renew an AP subscription that is expired or about to expire?
Locate a reseller in your area, contact WatchGuard Sales, or manage reseller relationships on your profile in the WatchGuard Support Center. When the AP subscription is renewed and activated in your WatchGuard account, you can update the license status of the AP in the Gateway Wireless Controller and update the AP feature key on the Firebox.
Why upgrade your AP to a Secure Wi-Fi or Total Wi-Fi license?
When you upgrade your Basic Wi-Fi subscription to a Total or Secure Wi-Fi subscription, you can manage your APs with Wi-Fi Cloud. With Wi-Fi Cloud, you unlock the full potential of your WatchGuard APs with patented WIPS security protection, intelligent network visibility and troubleshooting, location-based analytics, and marketing engagement tools. With Wi-Fi cloud, you also enable a Trusted Wireless Environment for your customers. To learn more about WatchGuard’s secure cloud-managed Wi-Fi, see watchguard.com/wifi.
